Background of the study
The colonial legacy in Lagos has left an indelible mark on its linguistic landscape, shaping contemporary notions of identity and communication. Historical encounters with colonial powers introduced English as a dominant language, often at the expense of indigenous tongues. This legacy established educational systems, administrative practices, and social hierarchies that continue to influence linguistic identity (Adebayo, 2023). In Lagos, residents frequently navigate between indigenous languages and English, reflecting a dual identity that is both modern and rooted in tradition (Balogun, 2024). The ongoing impact of colonial language policies raises concerns about the preservation of native languages and the redefinition of cultural identity in a post-colonial society. This study explores how colonial history has affected linguistic identity in Lagos by examining the socio-cultural and political factors that continue to shape language use in a rapidly urbanizing environment (Adeyemi, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the historical significance of colonial influence, research on its lasting effects on linguistic identity in contemporary Lagos is limited. The predominance of English—a colonial legacy—has raised concerns about the erosion of indigenous languages and its implications for cultural identity (Ogunleye, 2024). As Lagos evolves into a global metropolis, the tension between colonial and indigenous language use challenges educational and cultural integration. This study seeks to examine how colonial history influences linguistic identity, identifying factors that contribute to language preference and usage in a post-colonial context, and offering insights into preserving native linguistic heritage.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the impact of colonial language policies on current linguistic identity in Lagos.
  2. To analyze the coexistence and conflict between English and indigenous languages.
  3. To propose strategies for preserving indigenous languages in a post-colonial society.

Research questions:

  1. How has colonial history influenced the linguistic identity of Lagos residents?
  2. What are the effects of English predominance on indigenous language usage?
  3. What measures can promote a balanced linguistic identity?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Colonial history significantly impacts the current linguistic identity in Lagos.
  2. English predominance adversely affects indigenous language use.
  3. Bilingual education policies can enhance indigenous language preservation.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it provides insights into the long-lasting effects of colonial history on linguistic identity in Lagos. By exploring the interplay between colonial and indigenous languages, the research contributes to our understanding of cultural resilience and the challenges of preserving linguistic heritage. The findings will inform educational and cultural policy, promoting strategies for a balanced linguistic identity in a modern urban setting (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the effects of colonial history on linguistic identity in Lagos, focusing on urban and cultural contexts.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Colonial History: The period of foreign domination that shaped historical, cultural, and linguistic practices.
  2. Linguistic Identity: The self-perception derived from one’s cultural and language heritage.
  3. Indigenous Languages: Native languages that predate colonial influence.
